Bormio - APRES SKI
You go on a ski holiday to practice your ski skills end enjoy the winter scenery. But after a long day skiing on the slopes, unwinding is good, not only for your mind but for your body too.
Central Bormio has a good selection of lively bars, most of them also restaurants. The resort's long history means there are some sophisticated choices too, such as the Mozart tearoom with classical music or jazz to add ambience. The Aurora piano bar on via Coltura is equally high calibre. The King's Club on via Peccedi is the resort's discothèque.
Bormio is an exceptional area for dining. The Valtellina, just to the south, is one of Italy’s little-known wine-growing regions and the surrounding orchards produce excellent fruits. This, combined with the mountain flair for cheeses, sausages, dried meats and grappa, makes for a delicious mixture.
ry the Valtellina wines. Sassella, Inferno, Valgella and Grumello are all excellent red wines. The Sforzato (or Sfursat) wines are dessert wines made from dried grapes. Try it with fruit and cheese in front of a fireplace, the glass warmed in your hand. The bresaola, or aged, salted, dried beef, is an excellent mountain specialty. Pizzoccheri, the regional dish of buckwheat noodles with melted cheese, potatoes and cabbage is a hearty meal. Test the sciatt, a cheese-filled buckwheat donut hole. Enjoy excellent local cheeses such as Casera, Scimudin and Bitto. Other local foods are their game, river trout, porcini mushrooms, sausages, hams, polenta, honey and jams.
The best restaurant in town is Al Filo (right; Via Dante 6, 034..., closed Mon.) set in on old house cellar in the middle of the old town. It can only seat about 40 people. A local tasting menu costs about €27 and goes excellently with one of the local Valtellina wines. Finish off with Sassella Nera grappa.
A rustic old barn of a restaurant, La Rasiga (left; Via Marconi 6, 034..., closed Mon.), provides atmosphere in spades. Dine on local foodstuffs surrounded by wood and old sawmill and farming tools.
Soldiers fought in the surrounding mountains of Bormio in the First World War. For three years, from 1915 to 191, the combate on these mountain peaks were incredibly difficult due to the steep slopes, rock faces and icy glaciers. Many Military roads have been built, also paths and trials were made in order to provide the soldiers with food, materials and ammunition. They battled in incredible heights, very often on an altitude of more than 3000 metres. The 13th of August 1918 is remembered in Bormio. On this day the peaks of San Matteo and Mantello were conquered and Austrian bombing deceased. Many of these soldiers have never been found and their bodies lay to rest within the eternal ice and snow of the glaciers of the Valtellina mountains.
