Bormio - CHURCHES
Devoted to Saint Gervasio and Saint Protasio, twin children of Saint Vitale and Saint Valeria, and patrons of Bormio, this building has a pink frontage, unusual for the churches of this zone. On this front side two portals have been found, that belonged to the ancient church and that have been dated back to 1200. The church was already mentioned in the year 1000 in a decree of Lotario, and recognized as a community church: it is one of the most ancient of the Valtellina. A first reconstruction was made in 1454 but its total reconstruction is dated at the beginning of the 17th century when, after a fire, it was almost totally destroyed. What remains of the old church is the external foundations and some sporadic elements.
This church was built in 1356. It has a “capanna” facade, just one aisle, a barrel vault and the presbytery has a square plan. In ancient times there was only the great altar of Sant'Antonio Abate. The part that includes the chapel of the Saint Crucifix was added in 1734. The restored bell tower is in the “Lombardo” style and numerous paintings adorn the whole church. Through the centuries the Saint to which the whole church has been devoted, has been in a certain sense “dethroned” by a wooden crucifix that is believed to have miraculous healing powers and now the church is known uniquely by the name of Church and of the Saint Crucifix.
The church of San Vitale exists since 1196 and is a simple and elegant construction. There used to be a small ossuary near it until the last century and now it is still possible to see the Alberti headstone dated 10 October 1294. The church has maintained the original structure and is almost unchanged. on the external walls, which were raised in 1400, parts of frescos are still visible. On the southern facade, overlooking the Via Roma, a crucifix is represented. Above the altar, in the inside, it is possible to see a wooden icon of the ‘500 that is graven and carved. It is probably a work by a German artist. There are two coloured statues at the sides that represent the Saints Gervasio and Protasio.
The construction of the Church of S. Ignazio begun in 1635, when the Jesuits moved to Bormio, while its consecration is of the year 1674. The style of the church is the Baroque, which is very rich. The frescos inside have been painted by various artists. The dome is painted by G.B.Muttoni and it has a clock on the triumphal arc. Giacomo Lechi and Eugenio Ricci made the frescos on the walls. Eight galleries are opened on the sides, and it is possible to reach them from spiral staircases opened in the walls. These galleries were built for the students of the Jesuit College and today still existis the passage that connects the College to the Church.
Built in the 14th century, the Church of the Sasselo had been consecrated when Bormio was still under the jurisdiction of the bishop of Coira, probably in 1405. An inscription on the inside arc of the window next to the altar remembers that the building was built by Giovanni, father of Giacomo Gianazzini, and that of his son, Brizio, who painted it. The church was rebuilt in 1684 and it still has a fresco of 1400 in the lunette above the side door.
This small church is situated at the entrance of the town Bormio and it is not easily seen, due to its external sobriety and simplicity. Its inside keeps instead a real treasure, that is worth a visit. The church is mentioned inside a document of the14th century and it has probably been built during the 11 th century. It presents a simple irregular plant and a semicircular apse. Thanks to some inscriptions that are now no longer legible we know that the apse frescos have been painted by Aloisio Sermondi in 1475, made to order of Giacomo Alberti. On the triumphal arc there is, well preserved a painting of the Annunciation, with a very interesting Madonna. A complex and Gothic architectural structure is situated at the back of a Coronation of the Virgo made by the Holy Trinity. On the side-walls of the church, painted inside panels, we find different scenes: it is simple to recognise the work of different artists and different époques. There are images of saints that are usually found in other local churches and houses. There are also unusual scenes, for example the "Madonna della Misericordia", that is never present inside other frescos in the region. Furthermore, the recent restorations have shown some paintings that remained for ages under dust and plaster..
This church has been built at the beginning of 1500 after a public vote and was a country-side church until 1821, when the Austrian government decided to found a new cemetery near it, and to close the ones of other churches. This cemetery has been closed in1951 . The church presents a simple structure with a semicircular apse and just one altar: the precious golden icon made by the Fogaroli is now placed on the high altar of the Collegiata. Actually the church is closed for masses. It hosts a permanent exhibition of the painter Elvio Mainardi, which can be visited every day: from Monday to Friday 10.00 to 12.00 h and 17.00 to 19.00 h, on Saturdays from 10.00 to 12.00 h and from 16.00 to 18.00 h.
