Livigno is an Italian resort with a fantastic European following. However of late Livigno has become as popular with skiers from all over the world. As a duty free location Livigno offers a favorable price structure if you are buying electronic good, perfumes, liquor or the like. Hence it attracts mostly a young, budget conscious group of skiers and holidaymakers. For skiers Livigno has excellent possibilities Blessed with a more than adequate selection of skiable terrain, and if you...
More info | Itinerary | Important! | Booking Conditions ...forgive the almost total absence of what one might call real luxury five star hotels, Livigno has everything else one needs. There is an excellent choice of dining possibilities in some of the best and most reasonably priced restaurants in skidom. In fact the whole area offers a fun, laid back atmosphere. Livigno makes no claims to sophistication or airs about being a jet set destination. It is simply a good value, good fun, "lets do it" type of ski resort.
The duty free aspect is possibly the driving force in Livigno's character makeup. The reason it attracts the type of clientele it attracts. Good value in drinks, food, accommodation and skiing can lead to some pretty serious fun? What’s not to like?
The facade of the village is changing rapidly, and where once we described it as long and narrow, now it seems to be growing in a more orderly manner. There are basically two main streets running through the valley, with shopping and skiing on both sides. Spread out along the two main streets are hotels, restaurants, shops (duty free) ski schools and more.
WINTER LIVIGNO A flat open valley that disappeared into the horizon. Two chains of mountains that descended gently down to a town composed of a series of dark wooden houses that rose up out of the snow here and there in a long single row. A sheltered village flooded with sparkling rays of sun from the clear blue limpid sky, the air is fresh but revitalising, there are no roads, only tracks for sledges and an immense blanket of snow broken here and there by the green of the trees. This is how Livigno appeared in the thirties, to the German tourists who fell in love with Livigno and its skiing, coming in via the Gallo Pass by horse and sledge, the only way to get in from the Engadin at the time. These tourists would go for long treks on skis up the valley or climb up the gentler slopes around Livigno using snow shoes in order to ski down the virgin slopes. Then after the war advances in snow ploughs allowed Livigno to break its winter isolation. More tourists started to come, new hotels and the first ski lifts were built. Today Livigno is one of the most important European ski resorts and despite its growth it has been able to preserve its environment and architecture and the alpine atmosphere that those first German tourists so loved. Livigno is still a true mountain resort , the sort we all dream of, with an immense blanket of snow, blue skies and dotted with wooden cottages just below the tree line. SKIING IN LIVIGNO To appreciate the real evolvement of Livigno from a long, basically ugly town with skiing on both sides to the ski resort it is today requires that you make a visit to this Italian resort. The skiing is mainly divided into two sides, the Italian and the Swiss. Both are in Italy mind but one side is closer to Switzerland than the other. As the highest livable resort in Europe, Livigno often has snow when lower resorts do not; this too accounts in no small part for its attraction. Almost guaranteed snow is a big pull. The skiing on both sides of the valley is best suited to those of beginner and intermediate talents with little on tap for the real expert. Never mind; as a fun, duty free resort Livigno makes no apologies for any lack in top-flight skiing possibilities. With more than 30 lifts on both sides of the mountain and scores of ski pass sales points you will never be too far away from either a ski area or a place to buy your ticket. You might also like to know that each of Livignos ski areas (6 in all). Has its own website and most have their own ski school, so think carefully before you commit your holiday to any particular one. ITINERARY

St. MORITZ FOR SKIERS AND NON SKIERS St. Moritz - ski map
With all the glamour of the place, it can be easy to forget that St Moritz is actually a ski resort. But then again, the skiing is really only a backdrop to the glitz, although in 2003 the slopes will take centre stage as St Moritz plays host to the Alpine Ski World Championships Chic, elegant and exclusive, with an extremely cosmopolitan air, the resort is located at an altitude of 1856 metres above sea level and surrounded by the beautiful lake landscape of the Upper Engadine...
More info | Itinerary | Important | Booking Conditions ..In St. Moritz the sun shines 322 days a year. But even more legendary than that is St. Moritz's "champagne climate": sparkle and glamour, and international events attract top athletes, stars, statesmen and royal families to the health resort. And hotels, the gastronomy, shopping and leisure facilities in this top Upper Engadine resort are accordingly exclusive.
A visitor's card that is a travel pass for mountain transport facilities and buses, a parking disc and a credit card all in one while also entitling its holder to a great many discounts, is the perfect key for visitors to benefit from the countless opportunities on offer in the Upper Engadine.
The red trains of the Rhaetian Railway swiftly transport St. Moritz's visitors to the surrounding attractions: the ski regions of Diavolezza and Lagalb, the National Park in the Lower Engadine, by Bernina Express to the Mediterranean Puschlav and by world-famous Glacier Express to Chur and from there further to the Valais.
WINTER St. MORITZ St Moritz boasts legendary bob and toboggan courses, including an exhilarating 4.2km toboggan run from the viewpoint of Muottas Muragl – accessed by a funicular from the hamlet of Punt Muragl, 4km north of St Moritz – back down into the valley, a vertical drop of 700m (you can rent a sled at the top). The death-defying Cresta Run is for pros only, but the 1.6km Olympic bob-run is open to amateurs, with advance registration required (contact the St Moritz tourist office). There’s also the famous five-kilometre Preda–Bergün toboggan run : wooden sleds can be rented to make the winter run from Preda station, just over the Albula Pass, and the specially modified track run takes you down through the scenic Albula valley to Bergün, from where RhB trains will cart you back to the beginning (Fr.29 for a day ticket). Trains run late, so you can sled the illuminated route by night. SKIING IN St. MORITZ There are three main sectors. On the north side of the valley is the sunny, south-facing Corviglia, accessed by cable-car from St Moritz-Bad to Signal, a midway point below the Munt da San Murezzan (2659m), and by funicular from St Moritz-Dorf to Corviglia itself (2468m), below the soaring Piz Nair summit at 3057m. Red runs abound all over the mountain, including a long piste down through the trees into the valley. There’s a half-pipe for snowboarders on the Munt da San Murezzan. A gondola from nearby Celerina rises to Marguns (2278m), which gives access to more testing intermediate and difficult runs off Las Trais Fluors and Piz Glüna, as well as linking directly to Corviglia itself. On the opposite side of the valley is the Corvatsch area, accessed by cable-car from Surlej, a hamlet 3km south of St Moritz-Bad, and a chairlift from Alp Surlej, just above the hamlet. Both serve Murtèl below the peak of Piz Corvatsch (3451m) – again, long sweeping reds are plentiful, especially from the Corvatsch Bergstation, and the testing 8km Hahnensee black run drops through the trees down to St Moritz-Bad. A cable-car from the village of Sils Maria 4km south of Surlej serves Furtschellas, with its own welter of blues and scenic reds linked to Corvatsch. Some 12km south of St Moritz on the Bernina Pass road, just before the pass itself and with easy access from the nearby resort of Pontresina, is the Diavolezza area, with some long, steep difficult runs on the south side, and also off the face of Piz Lagalb (2959m) opposite.
