Bormio - ROMAN BATHS (Bagni Vecchi)
A dive into the past, an exciting journey back in time, when ancient travellers after a regenerating bath in the thermal waters with renovated forces continued their tiresome climb to the Stelvio and to Fraele, leading north of the Alps.
The Spa & Wellness centre, adjacent to the Hotel Bagni Vecchi, is subdivided into 6 sections offering 30 different thermal facilities and services for a complete remise en forme. A dive into more than two thousand years of history, from the Roman baths to the centuries-old grottos which lead from the hot water spring to the panoramic open air pool, overlooking the valley of Bormio. Six sectors with different spa treatment: relaxing, purifying, regenerating and toning, in an exciting context, unique in the world. The Roman baths which have been famous from the first century B.C., the Medieval baths, the Imperial baths and the Saint Martin Grotto that leads to one of the springs right in the heart of the mountain, offer incomparable timeless emotions.
The Roman Baths (Bagni vecchi) are splitted in 6 different and unique sections:

Vasca Plinio il Vecchio: Plinio, latin writer and naturalist, mentioned for the first time the hot water springs of Bormio in his Naturalis Historia of the1st century A.D.
Vasca Cassiodoro: In the 6th century A.D Cassiodoro, plenipotentiary roman senator, praised the therapeutic virtues of Bormio's waters in a letter to Emperor Teodato.
Vasca dell'Arciduchessa, open air: in the solarium in front of the Roman baths' caves a large wooden bath has been positioned, completely restored, that until the end of the 1800’s was part of the Bagni dell' Arciduchessa, a construction that was once on the meadow above the Roman baths and now destroyed. The Archduchess of Austria was oftena guest at the Bagni di Bormio profiting by this reserved structure, as it was her right in those times being a lady of high society.

Regenerating treatment for your skin, your spirit and mind. The facilities in this sector favour the complete regeneration of your skin leaving it soft and elastic, the saunas and the recreation areas guarantee complete mental relaxation. The Archduchess’ baths were built after the opening of Stelvio main way (1825) in order to guarantee an adequate privacy to the members of the Austro-Hungarian reigning family. After a period of restoration works the baths reopened to the public in2005.
Sauna rustica: Dry sauna, restored according to the antique techniques of the valtellina carpenters, for the regeneration of the skin and the well-being of all the senses.
Vasca di reazione: a cold water pool for a bathe, even if partial, to rebalance the body’s temperature and to complete the purifying and toning effects of the sauna.
Vasca fangosa: bath with thermal water enriched with natural muds which favour the peeling of the skin. We suggest a warm shower at the end of this treatment.
Stube secca: a stop in the high temperature dry ‘stube’ (after the mud-water treatment) completes the skin peeling action that renders it more elastic and velvet-like.
Bagno turco decongestionante: scented steam bath at a high temperature to cleanse in depth your skin, eliminating dead cells and fighting skin ageing.
Sala relax panoramica: a room for a brief relax after mud and sauna treatments.

Grotta Sudatoria di San Martino: a natural steam cave sauna, exclusive and unique in the world, a detoxifying route that takes place in two tunnels which penetrate into the rock for over 50 metres. Finished in 1827, the atmosphere in the grotto is that of a Roman Spa, but the route is traditionally thought of like a trip into Dante’s other side: from a heavenly pleasant temperature, to the warmth of the Purgatory, to an Infernal heat. In order to adapt your body gradually to the temperature (up to 48°C-119°F) and the increasing humidity (up to 95%) take the walk into Purgatory slowly.
Tepidarium: : A brief rest of 4-5 minutes to enhance the dilation of the pores
Calidarium:15 metres long pool with thermal water. Afterwards, to rebalance the body’s temperature a gentle massage with microscopic jets of cold water
Laconicum: the sauna section (or Inferno) where hot springs bubble up through the rocks at a temperature of about 43°C – 109°F. A rest of 8/10 minutes to promote the natural sweating process, bathing frequently yourself with warm water
Frigidarium: cold water pool where is advised to immerse only up to chest level. Before continuing the course into the other sections of the Spa Bagni Vecchi a brief relax is advised in the Liberty atrium. Comfortably seated on the characteristic cane armchairs, you can sip a couple of glasses of thermal water, which gives the necessary hydration.
