Livigno - HISTORY

1951 (Dramatic Avalanche), During the days between the 19 and 21 January in the year 1951 a great amount of snow is falling on Livigno. Even in the months before, in November and December, there were heavy snowfalls. On January 21, in the early morning hours, an enormous avalanche rolls down into the valley, destroying some houses in the village and killing seven inhabitants. |

1952 (Travelling the Foscagno during wintertime ), The Foscagno-Road can now be travelled through even during the winter. This is made possible by Rocco Silvestri, one of Livigno's most important inhabitants. Silvestri also initiated the wintertime opening of the route between Livigno and Bormio in the year 1950. Only in the year 1952, and also thanks to Mayor Gianvittorio Vittadini, the relevant administrations can be convinced, that an opening during wintertime can be achieved, based on the use of an enormous turbine-powered snow-clearer named "Rolba". After an adventurous five-day journey Rocco Silvestri, "Gioanìn da Tòni" and "Patrizio Silvestri" reach "Bondi", part of Livigno. They are greeted by the church bells, liberating Livigno from its seclusion during the winter. |

1953 (First Ski Lift Plant), The first ski lift plant in Livigno is based on an initiative of the Comitato Gare Livigno, engaged in Livigno's tourism. The first (used) ski lift plant is about 250 meters and comes from Montespluga. Rocco Silvestri modifies the plant some time later to 480 meters. Livitur is commits to widening the ski slopes and establishing a connection between them. The Mottolino is used for its first time December 7, 1959. |

1959 (First Ski School), With their Scuola Sci Livitur Lodovico, Cusini and Stefano Sertorelli found the first ski school in Livigno. Both ski instructors are assisted by Sandro Mottini and Ernesto Peri. Some years earlier Attilio Silvestri, "Bepìn" Mottini and Natale Galli, all of them hoteliers, hire mountain guides and ski instructors from Bormio, being able to offer their guests guided tours in through mountains around Livigno. |

1968 (Inauguration "Munt la Schera"), Inauguration of the "Munt La Schera" Tunnel, connecting Livigno with the Lower Engadine and Zernez in Switzerland. With the convention, signed by Italy and Switzerland on May 27, 1957, the sharing of the waters of the river Spöl was agreed upon. The Spöl originates under Livigno's ground. The water (about 90 million cubic metres) is diverted on 2.000 m to the artificial dams of Cancano and S.Giacomo di Fraele (A.E.M. Milan) in Italy, while Switzerland built a dam at Ponte del Gallo, creating a reservoir for arout 164 million cubic metres of water. The "Munt La Schera" Tunnel originally was built to transport needed materials to the dam at Ponte del Gallo from 1965 to 1968. On September 18, 1963 Livigno's mayor, Gianvittorio Vittadini, signed with the "Patto di Lugano" the clause, mandating to leave the tunnel open to car traffic, after it had been used to build the dam. |
