Venice Travel Tips

When visiting Venice?
Venice's quietest season is winter. You're unlikely to find Venice empty of tourists at any time, but late autumn and the first part of the winter are the best times to come if you want to avoid the crowds and take advantage of cheaper hotel rates. This is the best time to see a (relatively) tourist-free Venice - but be prepared for icy temperatures and mists.
In January and February the two-week-long Carnival is one of Venice's big attractions and the crowds flock in - it is even more important at this time to book a hotel well in advance. There are masks and parties; it's a bit tamer now, though, than the decadent excesses of the past.
As the spring turns into summer, tourist numbers rise; and Venice in the height of summer is avoided by many; August can be swelteringly hot.
The Venice Film Festival takes place in late August and early September.

Festivals
Venice is divided into six sections or sestieri. The Cannaregio is near the station. Also on the same side of the Grand Canal are San Marco and Castello. Santa Croce is across the Grand Canal from the train station and San Polo and the Dorsoduro are across the canal from St. Mark's. Venice Sestiere Map and Information
Restaurants
Sadly, many of Venice’s restaurants are expensive and touristy. That said, it is still possible to eat well, but you will have to look around, avoiding the main tourist thoroughfares. Here is a selection of our favorite restaurants:
Bars
When drinking is more important than eating, locals dive into a bacaro, the wine-only Venetian equivalent of a pub, where a series of little snacks (tapas-like cichètti) are on offer to patrons. A good choice is
Osteria alla Botte (campo San Bartolomeo, San Marco, 041 520 9775).
Harry’s Bar (calle Vallaresso, San Marco, 041 528 5777), of Hemingway and Orson Welles fame, may be a little on the pricey side, but still claims to make the best Bellini in town.
Another infamous tourist haunt is the Caffè Florian in St Mark’s Square, founded in 1720. Sitting on the piazza, listening to the orchestra, it’s easy to imagine Casanova working the tables, searching for a beautiful contessa to seduce. Dive-bombing pigeons and an army of tired tourists quickly dispel such fantasies.
Nightlife
The best stomping ground for music bars and late-night restaurants is along the fondamenta Misericordia in Cannaregio. The Iguana (041 713 561, closed Mon) serves Mexican food, has live music, friendly staff and stays open late. Cantina Vecia Carbonera (rio terà Maddalena, Cannaregio, 041 710 376) is a cool bacaro along the Strada Nuova. A hip new bar-restaurant, Centrale (piscina Frezzeria, San Marco, 041 296 0664, closed Tue), just steps from piazza San Marco, has a futuristic design but is anachronistically housed in a 16th-century shell. Campo Santa Margerita offers more mainstream fun with cafés and bars. In general, party animals might be better off leaving the Grand Canal and heading to the numerous bars and late-night discos on the Strand at the Lido.
